on wild at heart

Honoured to have been interviewed on Wild At Heart and would like to thank Zoe for having me. Read the full interview over on wildatheart.com.au

Where did you grow up and how did that shape your formative years stylistically?

I grew up in the suburbs of Auckland, New Zealand. My family home is a beautiful three-storey villa, my parents have been renovating since the day I was born. My childhood was picture-perfect; Golden Labrador, rose gardens, white picket fence, the youngest of three girls.

I grew up to appreciate a love for interiors, fresh flowers, friends and entertaining. My fondest childhood memories are of my family on our summer holidays at the lake and aspire to own my own lake house, with a pier and surrounding trees someday.

Tell us about the other places you've lived and those you've visited that have stuck with you, how are they reflected in your aesthetic and creative sensibilities?

I have lived in Amsterdam, where my fathers’ family is originally from, studying Design and Styling at the time. My peers were incredibly creative. They worked hard, and played hard. I admired them for the confidence they executed in their work and in the language they would use to describe it. So, although only 6 months this was a pivotal move, leaving me inspired and challenged to connect to my work in a new way.

I have been influenced by European style, culture and history after traveling through Belgium, France, Spain, Switzerland and Germany, and fallen in love with California after visiting Los Angeles last year.

a shirts tale

To give and to receive.

The satisfaction of giving and the pleasure in receiving. We're nearing the end of the year and Christmas will soon be upon us. Today in the studio with fellow creative minds, we thought how lovely it would be to receive fabrics, sent to us from around the world, each bringing with it a unique story.

Perhaps you're someone who collects off-cuts from flea markets or have a collection of Grandma's remnants stored away?

We would like to invite you to send us a piece of your fabric and with it a story, image or poem, telling us a little something about where it comes from and why it's special to you. We will then use the collection of fabrics we receive to create our staple shirt [No.1] and make them available for purchase in our online store www.sheriemuijs.com. These one-off shirts will be handmade in Berlin and available in sizes XS - L, retailing for $290 NZD (€175).

Should you wish to participate, here are the project requirements:

1. Send us 2.0m of fabric, suitable for a shirt. Only natural fabrics will be used [Ie, silk, cotton, linen]
2. Write us a story, a poem or send a picture, explaining where the fabric comes from and why it is special to you
3. If you wish to purchase the shirt made in your particular fabric, this can be requested and secured with a 30% deposit and a 10% discount off the retail price
4. Fabric must be sent before October 18th

Please e-mail projects@sheriemuijs.com for more details on where and how to send your fabric. We look forward to receiving your packages and to hearing your stories!

richer soil

The seeds planted in spring are finally starting to sprout in my new environment. I have given life a good prune to allow for new life and fresh perspectives to grow. A process that naturally has it's challenges. Finding this quote was exactly what I needed to read this morning.

There are, forever, buildings to be made, music to be composed, art to be created, clothes to be designed and photographs to be taken. But high speed can make for wrong turns, and short cuts can come out in the wrong place. Inspiring are those who break free to find a richer soil, in which to create.
